How do I register my puppy's microchip?

You can register your puppy’s microchip for a one-time fee online.

What information can you provide on crate training?

Crate training provides a secure place for your puppy, preventing them from eating and chewing things if they need to be left unattended. The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides great resources on crate training that we have linked below:

When should I schedule my puppy's first veterinary appointment?

Schedule an appointment within the first week of bringing your new puppy home.

Where should my puppy sleep at night?

We recommend in a crate near your bed. That way, you will be able to hear them tell you they need to use the bathroom. This can be difficult at first as they will whine, but it is crucial when potty training.

I suspect my puppy has ingested something potentially toxic/poisonous. What should I do?

Please contact the vet immediately, then notify SPR.

How do I introduce my new puppy to a dog I already have at home?

Always introduce a new puppy outdoors in a neutral space.

How can I prevent my puppy from chewing unwanted items, like my shoes?

Puppies will chew, it’s instinct. Provide them with multiple age/size appropriate chew toys and always monitor them for safety. Be sure to remove all other chewable objects from puppies reach.

Does my puppy need to be groomed?

Yes, Golden Retrievers require regular brushing and we recommend you bring your dog to a groomer. This keeps their coat clean
and free from matting.

Is it okay to put a collar on my puppy?

Yes. Be sure to check the fit often as puppies are still growing. You should be able to have two fingers between the collar and their skin.

How often should I exercise my puppy?

Three to four times a day. Short and quick walks are a great way to start exercising your pup. Make sure to let them smell and sniff, it can lengthen a walk, but it is important to help stimulate their growing brain.

When should I spay/neuter my puppy?

15 to 18 months of age, no sooner than 12 months.

Do we have to attend a training class?

You do not have to attend a training class, but it is beneficial to do so!
